Roy Guthrie marking 90th birthday

SALEM- Roy Guthrie of Salem will celebrate his 90th birthday on Saturday.

Mr. Guthrie is a World War II veteran of the United States Army in the 79th Infantry Division. He fought battles in Omaha Beach, Normandy (D-Day); Rhineland; Ardennes; and central Europe. He was presented the Purple Heart Medal, Good Conduct Medal, European African Middle East Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal and American Campaign Medal. Following his tour of service, he was employed as a fitter then foreman for 18 years at E.W. Bliss, retiring in 1984.

He married Eva Lee Gardner of Homestead, Pa., in 1944. They resided in the Salem area until he was widowed in 2007 after 63 years of marriage.

He is a life member at the Hose Club, VFW and especially the Amvets, where he is the No. 1 life member. He enjoys a special friendship with many people there. He has several nieces, nephews and their extended families that love him and would like to make his birthday a special one.
