Land owners in nine areas can expect tax increases soon

LISBON – When the Columbiana County Auditor’s Office gets around this month to mailing out the property tax bills for the first half of the year, land owners in nine areas can expect their taxes to increase because of money issues they helped pass.

The areas – Beaver Local school district, Homeworth and North Georgetown fire districts, Rogers village, and Perry, Fairfield, Liverpool, Middleton and West townships – all had levies or bond issues on the ballot in 2012 that were passed by voters and result in tax increases this year.

East Liverpool voters also approved a new street levy in 2012, but due to a mistake with the ballot language, the tax will go into effect in 2014 instead of this year.

The following is a list of those money issues that raise taxes in 2013:

– Beaver Local School District: Voters approved a combined 23-year bond issue totaling 5.7 mills to build a new school complex. The levies will raise property taxes by $175 a year for the owner of a $100,000 home.

– Perry Township: Voters renewed an existing 1.5-mill policy levy but as a replacement levy, which allows it to be collected at the levy’s original millage. For the owner of a $100,000 home, this would raise property taxes to $46 a year, an increase of $16.

– Fairfield Township: Voters renewed an existing levy but as a replacement levy. The result is the owner of a $100,000 home will pay $46 in taxes, an increase of $26.

– Homeworth and North Georgetown fire districts in Knox Township: Voters in both districts renewed a 1-mill fire levy as a replacement levy. The owner of the $100,000 home would pay $31 a year in taxes, an increase of $11.

– Liverpool Township: Voters approved renewal of an existing 1.5-mill police levy as a replacement levy, which had another 1.5 mills tacked on, for a combined 3 mills. The owner of a $100,000 home will pay $92 in taxes, an increase of $39.

– Middleton Township: Voters approved renewal of an existing 2-mill road levy as a replacement levy. The owner of a $100,000 will pay $61 in taxes on the levy, an increase of $23. Since a portion of the Beaver Local school district falls within the township, those landowners will also be hit with the tax increase from the bond issue.

– Rogers: Voters approved a new 2-mill operating levy, which will raise taxes by $61 for the owner of a $100,000 home. Just like some Middleton Township landowners, Rogers property owners will also be hit with the tax increase from the Beaver Local bond issue.

– West Township: Voters approved a new 3-mill road levy, which will raise taxes by $92 for the owner of a $100,000 home.
