Kenst announces permanent parking ban
SALEM – City Service/Safety Director Ken Kenst announced a permanent parking ban on Southeast Boulevard from Franklin Avenue to East State Street, along with the temporary closing of Second Street from Jennings to Ellsworth on Tuesday.
Stadium GM is installing a new catch basin on Second Street Tuesday, so the road will be closed all day while the work is being done.
Kenst said the police and fire departments have been notified, along with the school district and some businesses who use the street for travel, such as Ventra and MAC Trailer.
Howard Avenue will be open for travel north and south, he said.
On Southeast Boulevard, no parking signs will be placed on both sides of the street from Franklin Avenue to East State Street, with the police department enforcing the parking ban as soon as the signs are put in place.
Kenst said the street isn’t supposed to have parking now, but there may not have been adequate signs before. With the amount of traffic on that stretch of road, he said “we just wanted to clear that up.”
He said the problem area where vehicles have been parking on Southeast Boulevard was the section from Fairview to Park Avenue.
He said he wanted to make sure residents were made aware of the no parking rule.
