Leetonia council considers bed tax
LEETONIA- Village council will look into a possible bed tax after a resident suggested the idea at council’s regular meeting Wednesday night.
Council President Dan Summers said council will research the issue and discuss it with Village Solicitor Walter Newton after resident Linda Lutz suggested the tax be used to benefit the Parks Board. She suggested levying the tax on dwellings of more than five unrelated residents, recognizing that such a tax will need certain provisions.
In other news, council approved increasing the assistant fire chief salary to $1,200 annually, equal to that of the assistant EMS director, retroactive the Jan. 1. Dave Leffel currently fills the position.
Council also agreed to an employment settlement with police officer Ed Anderson to resign his full-time position with the department effective the end of March; approved a contract with the county commissioners to receive $10,000 to place an officer on the drug task force; and granted permission for Police Chief John Soldano to attend the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police annual conference April 28 through 30 for a fee of $499.
Council also awarded a bid of $13,705 from Snider & Associates Inc. of North Royalton for playground equipment and installation at Wick Park. The project is being funded with a NatureWorks grant secured by volunteer Karli Altomare. The village is responsible for $3,516.25 of the project.
Also at the meeting, village intern Justin Hite reported that prospective Eagle Scout Devin Wilson will be installing bike racks at Wick Park for his Eagle Scout project at no cost to the village.
Hite also reported that the proposed federal budget does not include funding for the AmeriCorps’ Appalachian Coal Country Team (ACCT) program which provides interns such as himself to communities. If the budget passes, the program will not be renewed after he leaves in November, he said. The village is in the second year of the three-year program.
The next regular meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 3 at Village Hall, preceded by a Water and Sewer Committee meeting at 6 p.m.
