Leetonia schools to finish year in black

LEETONIA- Schools Superintendent Rob Mehno Thursday night reported that the district is projected to finish the year without deficit spending.

Mehno told the school board that the district has avoided deficit spending for the past three years. From 2005 through 2010 the district averaged an yearly operating deficit of $281,000, he said.

Mehno also noted that district has avoided placing a new-money levy on the ballot for three years. The district suffered seven failed attempts in the just over two years prior.

The budget will be discussed in more detail when the five-year financial forecast is updated in May, Mehno said.

In other business the board hired for the remainder of the 2013-14 school year Janeann Luxeuil as a bus driver effective March 1, Jerri Bertolette as sub bus driver caller effective March 1, Kerry Dean as a substitute teacher, Jennifer Hiltbrand as a substitute bus driver effective Feb. 19, David Jenkins as a substitute bus driver and Rosalie Davis as a substitute teacher. The board also approved supplemental contracts for the 2013-14 school year for John McIlduff as athletic director and Marcia Duko as assistant athletic director.

Additionally the board approved the open enrollment application and timeline from April 1 through Aug. 23 for the 2013-14 school year; granted permission to the Leetonia Masonic Lodge to use the K-12 campus for the annual Harold Wurster Memorial Easter Egg Hunt March 23; and acknowledged the Bears to Bee Preschool’s letter of intent to renew its yearly contract for Room 11 in the Leetonia Elementary building.

The board also accepted donations of $500 from the Leetonia Eagles to the baseball supplemental; $500 each from Margaret Conrad and John and Kristine Conrad to the Conrad Scholarship; and $100 from the Leetonia Sportsmens Club, $50 from Shoppers Choice Marathon, $200 from the Leetonia American Legion, $15 from Newtons Service and Parts, $300 from the Washingtonville VFW Post 5532 and $50 from the Leetonia Dairy Queen to the track supplemental.

Also at the meeting Mehno recognized retiring bus driver Dave Hephner for his 30 years of service to the district and Lou Rammuno for serving as superintendent while Mehno was on a medical leave of absence in January.

Mehno also recognized the sixth-grade LASA boys basketball team that won the West Branch Tournament; the seventh-grade girls basketball team under the direction of Coach Will Jones that won the ITCL Lower Tier tournament; and the fourth-grade LASA girl’s basketball team that received the academic award during the LASA tournament for each team member earning a 4.0 grade point average, the first team in the history of the LASA tournament to do so.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. March 28 in Room 20 of the K-12 Campus.
