Donation to aid West Branch auditorium work

BELOIT- West Branch schools will receive a boost in maintenance of the community auditorium at the high school.

The school board Thursday night accepted an anonymous donation of $20,000 for improvements at the facility, as well as donations of $200 from Linda Wallace for Project Prom and $50 from Cope Farm for Right to Read.

In other business, a Destination Imagination team, which operates independently at the school, requested any funding assistance from the board and permission to use the school for fundraising events to help send the team to global competition being held at the University of Tennessee. The team, which finished first at regional and third at state to qualify for the global competition, needs $5,000 to send a team. Destination Imagination is a non-profit organization that teaches students the creative process.

The board agreed to discuss the issue.

Also at the meeting, the board extended the Variable Annuity Life Insurance Company Governmental 403(b) Plan to all confidential and supervisory employees who retire after the age of 55 in order to provide for the deferral of taxable income in accordance with guidelines set forth by the Internal Revenue Service. The plan had previously been provided to all certified (licensed) employees.

The board also approved a fiscal 2014 agreement with ACCESS for Internet and e-mail services as well as other financial, staff and student reporting requirements for a net total of $51,382.00 versus fiscal 2013 of $49,232; and approved the Mahoning County Educational Service Center to apply for a waiver regarding the maximum class size for preschool disability at the middle school in the p.m. classroom for the 2012-2013 school year.

The board also granted approval for the Damascus Elementary third- and fourth-graders to travel via charter buses to Pittsburgh to visit the Carnegie Science Center and Ducky Tours on May 22; granted permission for the Ohio Arsenal (14-year-olds) baseball team to utilize the baseball field in coordination with the Athletic Office; and changed the dates to July 29 through Aug. 16 for the Success by Six Initiative, a pre-kindergarten summer intervention program funded through sources provided by the district and United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 30.
