Glow Run to raise funds for coke ovens

LEETONIA- A 5K fun run is being held in Leetonia to help fund renovations at the Cherry Valley Coke Ovens.

The Cherry Valley Glow Run is scheduled for sundown June 1 at the coke oven park site. The 3.1-mile course travels from the coke ovens site through the streets of Leetonia, including the hill, and ends back at the coke ovens. The race is untimed, but participants will be entered in a raffle to be drawn at the end of the race.

Registration is $20. The first 150 participants will receive a T-shirt, glow sticks and goodie bag. Participants must register before May 22 to be guaranteed at T-shirt. Registration is available at the Mayor’s Office, 300 E. Main St., or online at or the event’s Facebook page.

According to event Coordinator Justin Hite, all money will go to support the expansion of the Leetonia Beehive Coke Oven Park.

“We’re trying to raise money for expansion and maintenance (at the park),” he explained. “Everybody does the breakfasts or spaghetti dinners, we had to look at things that could be scheduled without conflicting with other [dinners]. We chose the race because it seemed that Leetonia has been a little under-represented in the race department.”

Hite said he hopes the event can become an annual one.

The event is drug and alcohol free and all participants must sign a waiver. While the race is all ages, participants cannot use strollers, buggies, skateboards, roller skates, bicycles or anything with wheels. MP3 players, iPods and other such devices are also prohibited as they could serve as distractions during a night run.

Event sponsorship is available. For a gift of less than $100, sponsors will have their name printed in a brochure included in race day literature. For gifts of $101 to $250, sponsors will have their name listed in the brochure as a Gold Level Sponsor and their logo will be included on posters and larger printed material. For gifts of $251 or more, sponsors will have their logo included on race day T-shirts, posters and larger printed materials and be listed on the brochure as a Platinum Level Sponsor. Event coordinators are also accepting volunteers, materials and services for the event.
