New MRI arrives

A crane lifts Salem Community Hospital’s new 3 Tesla MRI, which weighs approximately 20,000 pounds, into the building earlier this week. According to SCH Chief Radiologist Peter Apicella, M.D., the new open bore MRI is the first available between Cleveland and Pittsburgh and offers twice the strength, twice the detail and twice the speed of other MRI scanners. The added detail will allow physicians to more accurately diagnose medical conditions at their earliest and potentially curable stages. The MRI , which uses a powerful magnetic field to produce highly detailed images of organs, bones and soft tissues in the body, will be available to area residents in May.
