Waste drop-off offered for Salem, Perry residents

PERRY TWP./SALEM – Township and city residents can do a little spring cleaning by taking part in a free drop-off event for large furniture items, televisions, electronics and computer items from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the Timberlanes parking lot.

The event is one of several being hosted by different governmental entities through the Columbiana-Carroll-Harrision Solid Waste District.

Salem Service/Safety Director Ken Kenst said it was his understanding there will be at least two rolloffs available in the parking lot, with both city and township personnel on hand. The large item drop-off is limited to city of Salem and Perry Township residents.

The event will serve as a precursor for the township’s annual spring cleanup for township residents living outside of the city limits, which kicks off on the north side beginning April 8 for one week, then switches to the south side for a week. State Street serves as the dividing line between north and south.

Township officials emphasized that residents should take advantage of the large item drop-off this weekend because they will not be accepting televisions and electronic equipment during the township cleanup. The cleanup also limits each household to one piece of heavy furniture that can be lifted by two people into a truck.

For the cleanup, all items must be placed curbside in disposable containers that can be lifted by one person into the truck, with each household limited to one truckload. The following items will not be accepted: batteries, paint products or paint cans, propone tanks and anything containing freon.

A total of five tires without rims will be accepted per household and must be separated from other items to be picked up since they’re picked up separately.

Branches and twigs should be bundled and piled separately since they’re also picked up at a different time.
