A patriotic gesture by Salem Wesleyan Academy students

Thirteen-year-old Shandria Campbell, left, and 14-year-old Heidi Grabill were among 42 students from the Salem Wesleyan Academy assisting as a community service with the placement of flags Wednesday on the grave sites of veterans. Over 2,000 flags were placed at Grandview and Hope cemeteries by the students and members of the Salem AMVETS, VFW and American Legion. The flags will remain as a tribute to our veterans until shortly after Flag Day which is June 14. The Salem Memorial Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Grandview Cemetery. The city’s 149th Memorial Day activities, sponsored by the Salem Memorial and Patriotic Association, will include a free breakfast for veterans at 8 a.m. in the Memorial Building, a 9 a.m. service on the Village Green and a 10 a.m. parade which will lead to Grandview Cemetery.
