Leetonia drug sweep clean

LEETONIA- A proactive drug sweep at the Leetonia K-12 campus Tuesday morning discovered zero drugs or contraband.

K-9 units from Beaver Township, Springfield, Canfield and St. Clair Township police departments conducted the unannounced search of the lockers and common areas inside the campus, as well as the parking lot, at approximately 10 a.m. The sweep was coordinated by Salem Township Constable Dan Valentine and the Leetonia Police Department.

According to Leetonia Police Chief John Soldano, the sweep was conducted at the request of schools Superintendent Rob Mehno. He said the school was locked down in a quick and proficient manner and no faculty or staff were observed roaming the halls.

“This is the first [sweep] we’ve had in a couple years and there was no contraband or drugs found, so overall it was very positive,” he said.

Mehno said the sweep was part of a continued effort to ensure the greatest safety for students.

“We wanted to be proactive,” he said. “We’ll continue to be diligent in being proactive about drugs on campus and school safety. It’s something we’re dedicated to.”
