Patrol probes fiery crash that killed 2
BERLIN TWP. – The highway patrol continues to investigate a fiery two-vehicle commercial crash on state Route 534 that claimed two lives late Monday night.
According to Sgt. Brad Bucey of the highway patrol, the roadway between Leffingwell Road and Western Reserve Road remained closed for nearly 12 hours after area safety service personnel responded to the crash just north of Western Reserve Road at 11:07 p.m. in which a southbound straight truck allegedly traveled off the right side of the roadway, overcorrected and then traveled left of center, striking head-on a semi-truck driven by Mark Hoskins, 54, of Alliance.
Both vehicles were engulfed in flames, which reportedly reached 50 to 60 feet in the air. The straight truck driver and passenger were entrapped and were pronounced dead at the scene. The names of the deceased were not released Tuesday night pending identification from the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office.
Hoskins was transported to St. Elizabeth Health Center with non life-threatening injuries sustained from breaking out a window to crawl out of the wreckage, according to Bucey.
