The weekly Arby’s cruise will reach a first next week when a local couple says their wedding vows at during the Salem Super Cruise next Saturday.
Gene Johnson, organizer for the Saturday night cruises, said Kimberly K. Fatherly and Stephen L. Bailey will be married at 3 p.m. Saturday during the cruise-in. Johnson said they researched it and as far as they can determine it will be the first cruise-in wedding ever in the area.
“We’re pretty excited about it,” he said, adding they will be playing 50s and 60s music like “Chapel of Love” and cars will be lined up forming an aisleway for the couple to walk down. Pastor Jason Vickery of the Real Life Assembly of God will officiate, Johnson said.
The weekly Saturday cruises, which collect food for the Salem Community Food Pantry, has already reached the 22,235 lbs. mark, Johnson said.
Last summer the Arby’s cruises donated 87,000 lbs and this year’s goal is 100,000 lbs. Johnson said they have been featuring two cars each week, a street rod and an all original car. “We’ve been getting some real nice cars to come out,” he said, adding they’ve been averaging about 100 cars each night.
During the Super Cruise, the Arby’s cruise will feature Randy Strader’s “Tribute” band at 5 p.m. Saturday and Abbey Road will be spotlighted at 8 p.m.
There will also be cruises on Thursday and Friday, Johnson said.
Also, the weekend of the Super Cruise, Quaker City Motorsports Parks will be hosting the 8th annual Steel Valley Super Nationals with hot rods and “run what you brung” racing all weekend.
The track, with a brand new 330-foot concrete starting line, is located three miles north of Salem on state Route 165 and the event includes test and tune drag racing, a “huge” vendors row, motorcycles and concerts. Core Promotions says it is the “biggest motorsports party around.”
Jackyl and the Huckin Fillbilly’s are featured in concert on Friday night with the Huckin Fillbilly’s opening at 8 p.m. and Jackyl taking the stage at 10 p.m.
General admission is $12 and children under 12 are free. The participant fee is $30. There will be a Phantom fireworks show on Friday night and “Skid Row” will be in concert on Saturday with “Haymaker” opening for them.
