Park shows part of big weekend

SALEM – Centennial Park will provide the setting for an antique car show from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and an arts & crafts show from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, both coinciding with the Salem Super Cruise weekend.

Salem Parks Director Steve Faber said they have plenty to complement other events in the city and want to add a variety of other options for people.

He also said this is a chance to show off what he called “beautiful Centennial Park” and to show what all the parks have to offer both residents and visitors.

The annual Antique Car Show, which is free to visitors and participants, is a joint effort of the Salem Parks and Recreation Department, the Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association (SAVNA) and the Tri-State Antique Car Club.

Cash awards will be presented for the parks department choice, the SAVNA choice and the Tri-State Antique Car Club choice out of all the vehicles participating. A fun variety of music will be played by DJ Dan Bing with free food served while it lasts, including hot dogs, chips and homemade ice cream.

Faber said the car show is not part of the Salem Super Cruise, but they’ve been holding the event the last few years in an effort to attract people to the park.

“Enjoy the atmosphere and look at some cars,” he said.

For the past two years, the parks department had been making an effort to hold two or three car shows during the summer, but this year, this will be the only car show event. Faber said the weather didn’t cooperate and was disappointing in general. He also said the turnout wasn’t as great for the other car shows as it was for the one they hold in June at the same time as the cruise weekend.

After an evening of cars, visitors can return Saturday for the annual Summer Arts & Crafts in the Park, with lunch available for purchase from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a Chinese auction drawing at 4:30 p.m., with some items donated by vendors.

Recreation Supervisor Shane Franks said he’s hoping to have at least 25 vendors, but said there’s room for plenty more. For $25, a vendor gets a 20 x 20 square foot area, with a table and chairs provided for an extra $10.

To reserve a spot, call the Memorial Building at 330-332-5512.

All proceeds from the arts & crafts event go to the Salem World War Memorial Building Association so the Memorial Building can continue providing area residents of all ages with programs, events and activities.

The Memorial Building has been serving the community for more than 80 years and Franks said the arts & crafts show is an important event.
