Perry Twp. trustees appropriate funds for cruiser

Trustees agreed this week to appropriate $30,000 for a new police cruiser and the equipment to outfit it, such as a light bar and cage, but the vehicle may not arrive until early next year.

Fiscal Officer Susan Johnston explained that the window for the state purchasing program is closed at the moment, but should be ready again sometime in July after a bidding process.

She said the township may not make the cruiser purchase until August or early September and then there’s a 90-day turnaround, putting the time for the vehicle’s arrival sometime in early 2014.

This year the trustees purchased a new pumper truck for the fire department.

The old pumper truck is part of a list of obsolete equipment the township plans to put up for auction on July 18 at the Roger’s Sale. Johnston said the township is taking part in the auction which was opened up to all townships and municipalities to get rid of old equipment and items that can’t be used anymore.

The trustees first heard about the auction from another township which was spreading the word about the event and letting township governments know about the opportunity.

The list of equipment includes what Johnston described as an estimated value for each item. The largest item on the list is the 1977 Sutphen pumper fire truck valued at $2,000. Fire Chief Bruce Whitcher previously said the fire truck can’t be used for fire fighting anymore,but could be used in parades or for washing heavy equipment.

Other items on the list and their estimated values include: a motrim ditcher, $1,000; drop spreader, $100; 5-gallon Lincoln air greaser, $50; concrete tile handler, $50; ready heater, $50; grace line striper, $1,000; and a cub cadet 14-hp riding mower, $200.

In other business, the trustees accepted the resignation of police officer Tom Gamble, who had been with the department more than six years and was reportedly pursuing other interests.

Johnston read a letter from Jenny Pike, the president of the Humane Society of Columbiana County, regarding the settlement of a case which started with a barking dog complaint by neighboring property owner Louis Grande. Grande had been to the trustees’ meeting last month complaining about barking dogs and said he didn’t see the agreement made when the case was settled.

Pike said the trustees could come over and peruse the agreement at the Humane Society facility.

The trustees announced they’ll only meet once in July, cancelling the meeting on July 8 and meeting at 6:30 p.m. July 22.

The next meeting is 6:30 p.m. June 24, preceded by a public hearing at 6 p.m. regarding two zoning amendments related to fences and political signs.
