Ex-boyfriend indicted for murder of Salem woman

LISBON – A murder charge against a Boardman man accused of killing his girlfriend in her Salem home was among the open indictments issued this week by the Columbiana County Common Pleas Court grand jury.

Mason M. Feisel, 34, Afton Avenue, Boardman, is charged in the death of his former girlfriend Samatha Shasteen, who was found early in the morning on June 5 in her bathtub with visible head trauma. An autopsy conducted in Summit County would later reveal the cause of death to be manual strangulation.

After Shasteen was discovered dead by her father, Feisel fled the garage, where he had reportedly been sleeping with the doors down, the vehicle running and a hose and sock laying next to the exhaust.

He was soon found by police hiding in the bushes and trees in a neighboring yard. When he was located, Feisel had reportedly been cutting his arms with a piece of glass. He had told police he wanted to harm himself, but refused to cooperate much in the investigation about what had happened to Shasteen.

Detective David Talbert of the Salem police testified during a preliminary hearing on June 13 in Columbiana County Municipal Court that Feisel did admit to police he has problems with his temper and even compared himself to the Incredible Hulk.

Feisel was bound over to the grand jury after about 30 minutes of testimony was given during a preliminary hearing before Judge Mark Frost.

Feisel and Shasteen had met at culinary school and reportedly had an on-again-off-again relationship for several years. They had a 4-year-old daughter together. There had been some information provided to police by Shasteen’s family which showed she had been planning to permanently break it off with Feisel and meet another man on the evening before her body was found.
