Green Twp. home damaged by fire

GREEN TWP.- An early morning house fire on U.S. Route 62 kept the roadway blocked for over three hours.

The Green Township firefighters responded to the home at 12611 U.S. Route 62 at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday. Flames were showing from the roof upon arrival, according to Fire Chief Todd Baird.

Baird said the homeowner, Rick Saulino, and his wife were alerted by a smoke detector and were able to exit their home safely with two dogs, a cat and a parakeet. A second cat died in the fire. The west end of the home sustained heavy damage, he said.

Baird said he was on scene with the investigator until approximately 11:20 a.m. Firefighters returned to the scene at 3:10 p.m. for possible smoke in the basement, he said.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined and the state fire marshal is investigating.

Damascus, Perry Township and Salem fire departments assisted with incident.
