46th Appleseed Festival is here

LISBON – September means many things. Beautiful weather, football, longer shadows, colder nights.

September also means apple dumplings, at least in Lisbon.

Apple dumplings are one of the symbols of the Johnny Appleseed Festival, which returns to the village for the 46th year this weekend.

The event will run all day and most of the night both Saturday and Sunday in and around the square in the downtown area.

For most, if not all, of the past 45 years the Lisbon Lions Club have offered their apple dumplings at the festival. That will not change this weekend.

What is special about this festival is that Saturday’s grand parade is dedicated in honor of the Lisbon Lions.

The parade will line up at 10 a.m. at McKinley School and begin at 11.

Two events precede the parade: a 5K run at 9 a.m. (registration at 8) and a breakfast for all JAF queens, also at 9, at the county Career and Technical Center.

Saturday’s events also feature a car show in from noon to 4 p.m. in the Presbyterian Church parking lot, the crowning of the JAF queen, Little Miss Apple Bud and Little Miss Apple Blossom at 12:30 p.m., and the apple baking contest at 4 p.m.

There also will be entertainment on the stage beginning at 1 p.m., closing with the Ohio Idol stars performing from 8:30 to 11.

Sunday begins with a church service at 11 a.m. at the stage.

Sunday’s events include a pet parade at 12:45 p.m., the pedal tractor pull at 2:15 and the ice cream eating contest at 3:15.

Another interesting item will be the unique style fashion show featuring duct tape formal ware.

The Pure Gold band will close the festival will its brand of music from 6-8 p.m.
