Goshen trustees lease truck for road department

GOSHEN TWP. – Trustees Monday night approved the leasing of a new road department truck instead of a purchase.

The trustees approved a five-year lease through FNB Commercial Leasing with a $1 buyout at the end of the five years. The trustees had previously approved up to $135,000 for the new truck with plow and spreader from Myers Equipment Corp. in Canfield with a $120,000 loan through Farmer’s National Bank, but Fiscal Officer Tom Knoedler reported at last month’s meeting that the Ohio Revised Code does not allow townships to borrow money for road department equipment. Knoedler said he and the bank were unaware of the prohibition when the loan was pre-approved.

The truck is built and ready for use, according to Roads Foreman Jim Stryffeler.

In other news, the trustees approved a mutual aid agreement with the Salem Police Department, accepted the resignation of reserve police officer Brandon Bridgewater and rehired as a part-time officer Mike Wirkner.

The trustees also declined to buy back a burial plot in the Bunker Hill Cemetery from a family who used money from a foundation to purchase the plot. Trustees said the action is against policy.

Also at the meeting Police Chief Steve McDaniel reported that burglaries are still prevalent in the area and residents should keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior. Anyone wishing to report suspicious behavior should contact the department at 330-332-0547.

The county board of health will hold a flu shot clinic from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 6 at the administration building.

The trustees will next meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at the administration building.
