Salem writes off 200 tax accounts

SALEM- The Finance Committee this week wrote off over 200 income tax accounts as uncollectible.

The committee Tuesday night wrote off 230 accounts totaling $87,186.89 from 2006 and prior which Income Tax Administrator Fred Pamer said are beyond the statute of limitations.

The remaining 61 accounts from 2007 to current total $11,290.86 and will be reviewed and categorized to find which ones are not absolutely uncollectible. Those will be turned over to the city’s tax collection agency in Cleveland.

The uncollectible accounts belong to deceased individuals, closed businesses or persons with unknown whereabouts, Pamer said.

Pamer explained that writing off the accounts will bring down the balance due.
