District expanding literacy campaign

LEETONIA – The Leetonia school district is expanding its literacy campaign community wide.

The district, in conjunction with the Leetonia Community Public Library, is hosting a Family Literacy Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in an attempt to promote literacy and bring families together, according to Tiffany Davis, the school’s literacy coach.

“We want to show parents how to help their kids in reading,” she said. “Show them the simple things they can do to help.”

The event will include a group reading and various activities in classrooms. Parents will learn how to help their children choose appropriate books for their reading levels and practice reading fluency at home, and will participate with their children in reading and writing activities. There will also be a book swap in which participants will receive a ticket for a chance to win a prize basket at the K-2 and 3-4 grade levels.

Parents are being asked to register their children prior to the event. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The district is accepting the cooperation of the library to make a community wide push toward literacy promotion, Davis said. Students and parents will have the opportunity to sign up for library cards and enter a drawing for a Lexibook Laptab by visiting the library at a later date.

“Build one community to work with our kids,” she said.

Davis said she hopes to hold a few literacy nights each year in the future.

Library Director Lisa Rohrbaugh said the event will be an excellent way to promote the library within the district it belongs.

“We’re excited to participate…promoting the library, being more visible,” she said.

Elementary Principal Ed Ridgeway, who along with Superintendent Rob Mehno signed up for a library card last week, praised the efforts of the Davis and the cooperation of the library to bring an important event to the community.

“[Davis] and [Rohrbaugh] deserve credit their hard work in this memorable event that will hopefully continue to be held,” he said.
