Former Franklin Twp. fiscal officer charged with theft in office

LISBON – A secret indictment has been served on the former fiscal officer for Franklin Township.

Jennifer L. Burton, 34, Emerick Road, Kensington, is charged with theft in office for allegedly taking more than $1,000 and less than $7,500 from the village of Summitville between March 2 and Nov. 22, 2011.

During that time period Burton was reportedly the fiscal officer for the village, a position she no longer holds.

According to Mayor Robert Marra, the charges involve information found during a routine state audit of the years 2009, 2010 and 2011. The audit has yet to be released online by State Auditor Dave Yost’s office.

Marra declined to further comment on the charges while the matter remains under investigation.

Assistant County Prosecutor John Gamble said the charges involve cash, which was paid by people for traffic citation fines and court costs. Those funds were collected while Burton was also serving as the clerk for the village’s mayor’s court. Gamble said the matter has to do with the record keeping for the cash collected.

The indictment was issued by the county grand jury in December.
