Leetonia council OKs increase in grave fees

LEETONIA- Village Council Wednesday night approved an increase in grave opening and closing fees at Oakdale Cemetery.

Council approved a $50 increase in costs at the suggestion of Cemetery Clerk Sue Simpson. The cost is now $550.

Simpson said the increase is due to an increase in expenses for digging the graves.

In other business council approved the addition of Bruce Whitcher, Cody Smeltzer, Tim Beadnell and Lydia Morrow as basic EMTs to the EMS Department, and named Kevin Siembida and Sue Buchanan to the Volunteer Fire Fighters’ Dependents Fund Board.

Also at the meeting, Village Administrator Gary Phillips reported that Walnut Street from Main to High streets is tentatively scheduled to be closed to through traffic on Monday for the replacement of two catch basins.

Phillips also noted that there are additional catch basins along Lisbon Street that need repaired due to truck damage. Council asked Phillips to consider ways to make the basins stronger in order to hold up better.

Additionally EMS Director Kevin Cibula told council that the department is seeking a grant to fund replacement of two Lifepaks that will no longer be serviced beginning in 2016. He said the cost to replace the equipment is approximately $55,000, but a grant could cut the cost to 10 percent for the department.

The next regular council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 5 at Village Hall, preceded by Water/Sewer Committee at 6 p.m. and Zoning Committee at 6:30 p.m.
