Recycle holiday waste

Looking to clean up after the holidays?

Area residents can drop off their Christmas trees, cards and wrapping paper at recycling sites across Mahoning County this month as part of the Green Team’s annual holiday recycling drives.

According to Kim Lewis, program manager with the Green Team, the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Drive through the end of the month and Wrap It Up Again! drive through Jan. 15 help divert some of the extra 5 million tons of waste is generated during the holidays. Last year nearly 5,000 pounds of wrapping paper and greeting cards along with 120,000 pounds of Christmas trees were diverted from the waste stream in Mahoning County.

Christmas Tree Recycling Drive: Cut trees can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until Jan. 31 at the following area locations: Goshen Township Maintenance Garage, 12649 Seacrist Road, Salem; Green Township Cemetery, intersection of state Route 165 and Beaver Creek Road; Ellsworth Township Fire Station on state Route 45; the Berlin Township Building on state Route 224 in Berlin Center; and the Smith Township Building, 846 N. Johnson Road, Sebring. All decorations must be removed.

The trees will be donated to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for use as submersible wildlife habitat in area lakes, Lewis said.

Wrap It Up Again!: Wrapping paper and greeting cards can be dropped off during business hours at any county recycling site through Jan. 15. Materials should be delivered in brown paper bags with no ribbons, bows or foil wrap. The drive is part of the Green Team’s fiber program which uses the old paper for new, according to Lewis.

For information about the drives and a complete list of county locations are available by calling the Green Team at 330-740-2060 or visiting www.greenteam.cc.
