Goshen Twp. recycle site to remain open

GOSHEN TWP.- The township will keep its recycling site at Colonial Villa, but will not receive funding for it from the county.

Township trustee Chair Bob McCracken reported Monday night that the Green Team’s recycling containers will remain at the trailer park, with the current ownership paying for pick ups and the Green Team continuing maintenance. The tonnage collected will count toward the township’s totals, but the township will not receive funding for it this year.

Trustees were informed in September that the site would be closed along with six others across the county due to a $500,000 shortfall in the Green Team’s 2014 budget. It was tentatively scheduled to close the second week of January.

Recycling Coordinator Paul Manypenny had battled the closing since it was announced, citing the consistent traffic at the site. He spearheaded a telephone campaign to encourage patrons at the site to contact the Green Team in protest.

McCracken said it is still undetermined if the budget cuts will extend beyond this year.

In other business McCracken reported that the township will receive no initial funding for an appliance or electronic drive this year due to the Green Team’s budget cuts. He said funding for the drives was awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis over a two-week period of meetings with township officials, and Goshen was one of the last townships to get to submit requests. Green Township will receive funding for both drives.

McCracken said although the township did not receive initial funding, there will possibly be more later in the summer or the township could hold its own with no funding.
