Greier, Creer receive AP award nominations

Finalists have been announced in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors’ 2013 newspaper contest.

The awards in actual order of finish – first, second and third places – will be announced at the Ohio APME annual awards banquet May 18 in Columbus.

Sixty-four daily newspapers submitted 2,599 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2013. The Salem News is in the Div. I category (up to 7,900 circ.)

Salem News reporter Mary Ann Greier has been nominated in the Breaking News category. She wrote three stories for the Aug. 24 edition, all on deadline, dealing with the Aug. 23 resignation of a Salem teacher who had been investigated for an alleged inappropriate relationship with a female student. The stories focused on the school district’s investigation and acceptance of the resignation, the police investigation and the reaction of the student’s father.

Managing editor J.D. Creer is nominated for Best Sports Photo. The photo, “Ref Knocked Over,” was taken during Ohio State’s win over Florida A&M on Sept. 21.
