Spring opening set for EuroGyro
SALEM – Rod Herron acknowledges being too optimistic last October when he expected the EuroGyro restaurant at 110 E. State St. to open before Christmas.
That didn’t happen but progress is at a point where he’s comfortable with putting a two-month window on opening now.
A local developer, Herron is partnering with George Istocki, who owns the EuroGyro franchise, in converting the corner building into a three-room EuroGyro restaurant.
In announcing the project last October, Herron said the EuroGryo (www.eurogyro.net) will be themed “old” Salem and said if anyone has local memorabilia the restaurant will put it on display and people can contact him at the site.
The items will be considered on loan and Herron said contributors can have them returned at any time.
“I’m trying to keep old things,” he said in October while pointing out two fireplaces that were uncovered, hiding behind the walls.
One is on the east wall just off the North Ellsworth Avenue sidewalk and the other is in the west wall by the rear parking lot.
A new 40-foot long bar will greet customers through the front door with a backdrop of high columns from a Max and Erma’s.
Herron had the windows custom-designed by his son with Salem’s old city hall etched into them, the ceiling is renovated with portions of tin ballroom ceiling panels that were dismantled from an upstair’s room, part of the bar-lounge decor will include large iron-banded, wood whiskey barrels and he has a set of special beer taps on order from Las Vegas,
“It’s really, finally coming together,” he said Friday.
The liquor license was acquired from the just-closed JD’s Wood Fired Grill on South Ellsworth Ave. It’s the same license that once hung on the wall of the Rodis Gin Mill when it was just down the street from the EuroGyro.
Herron is anxious to open and has Stephanie Sue hired to manage the facility that will will feature a central bar and lounge/dining area and two adjoining main dining areas, one where the old barbershop was and the other wing to the west.
Seating will be about 100 and Herron expects to hire between 12 and 15 people to serve an extensive EuroGryo menu and 16 different beers on tap.
Work began in September and Herron estimated the investment will be more than $400,000.”
There will be a audio-video projector capability in one dining room for presentations.
EuroGyros also offers delivery service on $10 and up orders for a $2 delivery fee.
