Leetonia EMS getting new ambulance
LEETONIA- Village Council Wednesday night approved the purchase of a new ambulance through the state purchasing program.
Council approved the purchase of a 2014 demonstration model ambulance from Penn Care for $87,575 after trade-in to replace a 2001 ambulance that is no longer in operation. EMS Coordinator Kevin Cibula said that although the vehicle has some miles on it, it is essentially brand new. He said it is ready to be delivered on Monday.
Cibula said last month that he is seeking a $70,000 FEMA grant with 10 percent matching to cover the cost of the purchase. Currently the department is operating with just one ambulance due to the second one frequently breaking down, Cibula said.
Council agreed to finance $70,000 for four years at 3.45 percent interest through Huntington Bank rather than seek financing for $200 less through Tax Exempt Leasing Corp., with which Fiscal Officer Randy Chismar said he was unfamiliar.
In other business council approved a 100 percent tax abatement for 15 years for Pennex Aluminum Company at the Leetonia Trade Park for its $33 million expansion project. The company will pay 25 percent directly to the school district. Village Solicitor Walter Newton said the village will collect income tax on the additional employees due to the expansion. The agreement has already been authorized by the school board.
Additionally council approved an amendment to its personnel policy establishing retroactive vacation status for part-time employees promoted to full time who have averaged 35 hours or more per week for the prior 10 years.
Also at the meeting, Councilmember Sue Buchanan reminded residents pre-registration has started for the Where’s Bigfoot 5K Race on June 21 to benefit the coke ovens. The race begins at 10 a.m., registration at 9 a.m., starting and ending at the coke ovens.
