Mahoning County officials make pitch for sales tax renewal
GOSHEN TWP. – Mahoning County representatives spoke about a sales tax renewal on the May ballot at the township trustees’ meeting Monday night.
Audrey Tillis, county budget director, spoke about the county’s .5 percent sales tax renewal on a continuous basis in May. The tax generates $15.5 million for the county’s general fund, a crucial portion of the budget that the county cannot operate without, Tillis said.
Although the current tax is only for five years, Tillis said the county is seeking the renewal on a continuous basis since it has no other option to operate without the tax. She noted that expenditures last year were $53 million and that carryover balances are dwindling, with the budget showing a $1.4 million shortfall this year.
Tillis said the tax equates to $50 for a $10,000 discretionary income and is most evident in the county services that directly affect tax payers.
The representatives also discussed the $50,000 grant for which the county has applied to conduct a study in streamlining emergency services communication across the county. The grant will be for consultation to determine the best system and for developing an implementation plan to best meet the communication needs of local departments.
Even though this is at least the third attempt at a 911 study that some of the township administrators said they can remember, the county representatives said the collaborative efforts of new county administrators, plus those of the local governments, suggest this attempt will work.
In other business the trustees authorized Road Foreman Jim Stryffeler to get estimates for chip and seal materials to possibly resurface Diagonal Road, which Stryffeler said is breaking up and upsetting residents after drainage was installed last summer. Former trustee Abe Bricker suggested the problem is with the tile and not the township’s responsibility since other roads that had been given the same treatment in the past did not react the same way.
The trustees also authorized Stryffeler to seeks bids for an old road department truck with plow and spreader. If the bids do not meet a minimum amount, the truck will be sold at auction at a later date.
Also at the meeting Recycling Coordinator Paul Manypenny reported that whether or not the department receives funding to conduct collection drives this year, an appliance and scrap metal collection will still be held May 17 and an electronics drive and customer appreciation day on Sept. 17. He said he has submitted a letter requesting funding if any comes available.
Additionally the trustees accepted the resignation effective March 10 of police officer David Eck, who took a full-time position with the Dayton police department; and hired Dylan Schaeffer of Sebring as a reserve officer.
The trustees also reminded residents to remove any decorations from the cemeteries by Saturday.
The next regular trustees meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 14 at the administration building.
