Progress downtown to be focus
Residents interested in hearing about positive improvements done by Salem businesses in the past year can attend city council’s Committee of the Whole meeting at 6 p.m. March 25.
The Beautification Committee of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce will showcase some of the projects completed during a PowerPoint presentation to council members.
“We want to help promote the good things going on in our community,” chamber Executive Director Audrey Null said.
The presentation will include photographs of businesses and the improvements made to their facades, parking lots or landscaping. She said the program will mostly focus on the downtown, but will feature other areas of the city where work was done, looking at new renovations and new construction, too.
Beautification Committee members expected to speak include Karen Carter, Elaine Rousseau-Kothera and Jennifer Brown. Null said they’ll be touching on some of their programs, such as Paint the Town which encouraged businesses to make cosmetic improvements with just a coat of paint. They’ll also talk about the Adopt-A-Planter program for businesses and individuals to adopt a planter in the downtown area.
Members of the Beautification Committee take turns watering the plants downtown in the spring, summer and fall.
She said they’ll probably talk about the condition of the sidewalks downtown, too.
Null stressed the importance of staying positive. She said people need to know about the good things happening in Salem. They hear so much negative all the time, she said they need to hear about some of the good economic development happening.
The presentation will be informational. She said the committee is made up of a great group of volunteers who act as cheerleaders for the city, saying she’s appreciative of all they do.
“There’s a lot of good activity going on,” Null said.
All meetings of city council committees are open to the public. The meeting will be held in council chambers at city hall.
