Salem detectives probe early morning assault, stabbing
SALEM – City detectives are investigating an assault incident on East Third Street early Wednesday which sent two men to different hospitals to be treated and released.
“Neither side is cooperating,” Det. Dave Talbert said. “We’re not sure exactly what took place. There were two subjects with minor injuries.”
Police received the initial call at 4:30 a.m. to respond to an apartment in the 800 block of East Third Street. Officers were responding there when another call came for an injured person in a downtown apartment in the 500 block of East State Street.
Talbert said they quickly realized the two calls were related. A Salem man at the Third Street property had a head wound which was treated at Salem Regional Medical Center. The man at the State Street property was from Youngstown and was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown for a suspected stab wound that turned out to be a superficial wound.
According to Talbert, neither man lived at the Third Street address and didn’t know each other, but both had been visiting a mutual friend there.
No charges have been filed. Evidence was gathered at the scene and interviews conducted, but he said the alleged victims were not cooperating. Once the investigation is completed, the information will be turned over to the Columbiana County Prosecutor’s Office.
In gathering evidence at the scene, including suspected weapons that were confiscated, investigators came across drug paraphernalia which was also confiscated.
