West Branch BOE holds off calendar approval

BELOIT- Considering the harsh weather the area has suffered through this winter, the West Branch school board Thursday night tabled approval of the 2014-2015 school calendar to ensure an appropriate amount of days will be available for make-up if necessary.

The calendar calls for first day of classes on Sept. 3, last day June 3 and graduation May 31. Schools Superintendent Dr. Scott Weingart said those days are not in question. He said the administration will take an extra look at the calendar to build in possible calamity days.

Weingart commended city and township road crews for their work in keeping the roads clear, plus the district’s custodial staffs, drivers and transportation department and administrative support staff for their efforts during the tough winter and district parents for cooperation and flexibility when school is delayed or canceled.

In other business the board accepted the retirement of Christy Biery under the retire-rehire provision at the end of the school year. Weingart said Biery has been with the district her entire 35-year career, mostly as a business and technology teacher at the high school. She has also served in multiple student advisory and professional mentor capacities during her career.

The board also accepted the resignation of Michael Sigler as co-weight room supervisor and named Shane Blommel to the position; and hired Kathleen Sauline as a home instructor, Cathy Tedrow as a 2.5-hour cashier, Tracy Muckleroy as a 4.5-hour cook’s helper and Lisa Carroll as a 5.5-hour cook’s helper.

Also at the meeting the board accepted two $15,000 anonymous donations for the choir fund and track improvements as well as $500 from Deerfield Farms to the FFA and $25 from Richard and Karen Elsner to the Knox Principal Fund. The board also granted permission to the Sebring-West Branch Fast Pitch League to use the high school girls’ softball field this summer.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. March 27 in the high school media center.
