LISBON – A Leetonia man accused of shooting at his son during an angry episode on April 9 made an initial appearance in Columbiana County Municipal Court on Thursday morning.
Appearing before Judge Carol Robb by video from the county jail, Douglas R. Illig Sr., 49, Walnut Street, Leetonia, is charged with felonious assault. Bond was set at $250,000 cash or surety.
A preliminary hearing was set for April 21 for Illig, who was just brought back from Pennsylvania after he had run to the Ohioville area following the alleged shooting incident last week.
According to court documents, Illig was in a fit of rage because Columbia Gas workers were there to shut off his service. He then got into a fight with his son. However, his son, determined to leave, went outside to get into his vehicle.
The son reportedly looked back at his father just in time to see him fire a shot from a .22-caliber handgun. The bullet struck the driver’s side window of the son’s vehicle.
Three tearful women who know Illig were in the courtroom during the brief hearing.
