Crestview BOE honors district’s volunteers

COLUMBIANA – The Crestview Board of Education honored volunteers at its meeting last week, declaring April National Volunteer Month. It was noted the volunteers at Crestview are one of the things that sets the school apart from others.

Parents and grandparents are known for coming back to the school and helping students at both the elementary and middle school. Possibly following in those footsteps, the students at Crestview are also known to volunteer.

Two upcoming opportunities to help others were talked about during the meeting.

The Day of Hope will be held Thursday, a day for high school students to volunteer and serve others. In honor of the day, Students from the eighth and ninth grade student leadership team created a slide show video presentation, which included interviews with several of the people in the Crestview district affected by cancer.

Board President John Garwood, who himself lost a son to the disease, was noticeably affected by the video as he thanked the students for their work. Garwood noted that losing someone to cancer makes so many other things unimportant.

On May 15, the school will sponsor an American Cancer Society Mini Relay for Life event to help raise money for cancer research. In connection with that event, senior class officers have organized a Cruise for a Cure event for Sunday, May 18.

Samuel Weikart spoke before the board in March about the cruise event, which was at that point in the planning stages. The plans have now been finalized, with exhibitors invited to bring their vehicles to the parking lot next to the new Performing Arts Center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will include music, food, prizes and souvenirs. Classes have been created for a wide variety of vehicles including trucks, Jeeps and other off-road vehicles; muscle cars, hot rods, classics, luxury, motorcycles and even tractors.

Entry for preregistered vehicles will cost $8, while those cruising in on the day of the event will cost $10. The proceeds from the event will go toward cancer research. Those interested in preregistering for the cruise or with questions can call 427-6662, text 234-567-7654 or e-mail at
