New Waterford Fire Department busy on Saturday

The New Waterford Fire Department responded to a house fire at the Matthew Massey residence on 46312 Waynewood Drive shortly after noon on Saturday. A quick thinking Massey had extinguished the fire in his furnace with a home extinguisher before firefighters arrived. They vented the smoke from the house and made sure it was out. According to Fire Chief Greg VanPelt when Massey’s air conditioner kicked on it let out a puff of smoke and Massey went to the basement to find his furnace engulfed in flames. New Waterford firefighters/EMS were backed up by a half dozen firefighters each from both the East Palestine and Negley stations. (Salem News photo by Patti Schaeffer)
