Scrap collection under way in Washingtonville

WASHINGTONVILLE – The village placed a 40-cubic yard dumpster at the community building Monday and has invited residents of Leetonia and Green Township along with village residents to use it, Mayor Will Jones said Wednesday.

Councilman Al Vignon arranged for the dumpster and Jones said it was council’s initiative, more than his.

The dumpster will be available until Wednesday, June 18, and Jones asked residents to use common sense. They can place appliances without freon, furniture, lawn mowers-just about anything from house cleaning except tires, mattresses or regular garbage. They can also get rid of small bundles of branches and brush, he said. Refrigerated units like air conditioners need to have the freon removed.

The dumpster will be situated so people can drop off items at the door at the back of the unit.

Jones said the dumpster door will be open each day from noon until 5 p.m. beginning today on all week days; and from noon until 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

“All we ask is people use common sense when they put things in it,” he said, adding that Leetonia and Green Township area residents are welcome to use it.

On Wednesday, Police Chief Ken Faust thought the dumpster was placed too far back toward the community building for access by people and Jones arranged for the street department to move it forward.

Faust said the current village council is different from past councils in that it doesn’t bicker and agreed with Jones that it is willing to go the extra mile.

There is a village-wide cleanup set for 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. on June 28 and Jones said they might bring in another large dumpster.
