Super Cruise kicks off at 7 p.m. tonight

SALEM – The official kickoff for the 9th Annual Super Cruise will be held at the municipal parking lot on East Pershing St. at 7 p.m. tonight when Mayor John Berlin gives the command for cruisers to “Start Your Engines.”

That command will send the horsepower into motion and a weekend of 50s and 60s music will be streamed throughout the city from the lot which is the major show-car staging area.

There are two other designated show-car lots: Arby’s Restaurant, and the municipal lot on East Second Street.

Cars will begin gathering in those three lots from 4 to 9 p.m.

The Super Cruise held its unofficial kick-off Thursday at Essex I where about 90 cars and motorcycles showed up.

All the Super Cruise live entertainment is sponsored by MAC Trailer and the Broadway stage is sponsored by Ohio Edison and Howells & Baird Engineering of Salem.

The SOBO Band will be spotlighted on the Broadway stage from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Also today, John Kufleitner’s new showroom, the Galleria of Vintage, Classic and Pristine Cars on Salem-Alliance Road, will hold a Super Cruise kickoff party with free dash plaques for the first 100 cruisers from 4 to 9 p.m.

The Galleria has a number of classics, muscle cars and street rods in the showroom and free refreshments will be offered.

Along with the engine-revving start-up, a four-day raffle is a new aspect with half the money raised going to the Salem Community Food Pantry which the Arby’s Cruisin’ Crew supports.

“All the money goes into the four-day pot,” Johnson said and the winning ticket will be drawn at 3 p.m. during Sunday’s Show ‘n Shine with Mayor Berlin picking the winner.

Johnson said there are 20,000 tickets and 4,500 numbers will be assigned through a streamlined registration system in which ticket buyers sign up one time and don’t have to fill out the back of each ticket.

The four-day 50/50 tickets will sell at three for a dollar or 15 (arms length) for five dollars.

“We’re shooting for about $5,000,” Johnson said, explaining the winner does not have to be present during the drawing on Sunday.

There is another big raffle that is being called “The Tool Box Raffle” in which the prize is tool box donated by Jackson Auto Supply NAPA in Salem.

The tool box is valued at $900 and tickets are five dollars each and available at Jackson’s Auto Supply on the West State Street-Jennings Avenue intersection or at the three show-car parking locations during the cruise.

The winning ticket will be draw by Bob Jackson Sunday afternoon at the Bricker Automotive Show ‘n Shine.

On Friday, show car cruising will run from noon until 11 p.m. and there will be a free public parking and shuttle service to the downtown area from 5 to 10 p.m. from the Salem Regional Medical Center lot on E. Third St. and from the Dairy Queen on W. State St.

The shuttle service will run on Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, the annual antique car show will be back at Centennial Park from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and “Uptown Saturday Night” will be on the Broadway stage from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. followed by “Manhattan” from 9 to 11 p.m.

On Saturday, show car cruising runs from noon until 11 p.m. and there will be a live broadcast of K-105’s Doug and MaryAnn on the Broadway stage from 1 to p.m.

The Zach Paxson Band will perform on the Broadway Stage from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and the Mainstreet Lions will take center stage from 9 to 11 p.m.

On Sunday, the second annual Salem Super Cruise Autocross sponsored by Stretch’s Rod Shop on Benton Road will be held at the Salem High School parking lot, rain or shine.

The Salem Walmart is providing free water at the autocross.

The entry fee is $20 for Sports Car Club of America members and $25 for non-members. The proceeds benefit the Banquet of Salem.

Registration is from 9 to 10 a.m. and racing begins at 11 a.m. Drivers 16-years-old and up can compete with a release and age affidavit that can be downloaded at

Also on Sunday, there will be the Bricker Automotive NAPA Show ‘n Shine at the municipal lot on E. Pershing St. from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Trophies for the Bricker Automotive Show ‘n Shine came about through the efforts of Tom and Patty Hall of Lisbon who obtained all the items needed for the show ‘n shine show.

Also, River Hawk will be on the Broadway stage from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and the Gordon James Band will perform from 3 to 5 p.m.
