Leetonia board approves raises

LEETONIA- The school board Tuesday night approved raises for teachers.

The board approved a new three-year negotiated agreement with the Leetonia Education Association effective Sept. 1, 2014, through Aug. 31, 2017. The new contract calls for a 3 percent annual raise in base salary, the first in seven years, and includes increases in the teachers’ deductible and premiums for health care.

Schools Superintendent Rob Mehno credited the teaching staff for past sacrifices made with the best interest of the students in mind.

“I have had the privilege of working with the Leetonia staff and Board of Education for over five years and three contract negotiations,” he said. “The teamwork and enthusiastic attitude to do what is best for the students and community is overwhelming. I want to thank the teachers for their continued focus on the students and well-being of the school district. This agreement exemplifies their continued commitment to do what is best for the students, as well as our school system and community.”

LEA President Marcia Duko acknowledged the hard work that went into negotiating the first real three-year contract in years.

“The commitment is here to make this one of the best districts in the county and I think it shows,” she said.

Board member Larry Duko abstained from the vote.

In other business the board hired Leisa Lorch as EMIS/Administrative secretary under a two-year contract effective Aug. 1 and approved compensation for nine days she worked in July, effective July 21. The board also agreed to pay former EMIS/Administrative secretary Cheryl Almy a rate of $17.34 per hour to help with EMIS/Administrative duties.

The board also hired Brandon Frenger and Chelsie Sauerwein as Title 1 tutors for the 2014-2015 school year under a limited one-year contract.

Additionally the board accepted donations of $100 from Marlene Totora-Frenger for the Leetonia Football Program; $200 each from the Barkett Family and LASA for the soccer program; $75 in memory of Dorothy Mango for the Leetonia Football Program on behalf of Court of Common Pleas; $50 for the Rob Perkins Scholarship Fund from Diane Perkins; and a total of $990 to the Hall of Fame Fund from various community members and organizations.
