Salem school board approves contracts

SALEM – The Salem school board handled several personnel matters during a recent morning meeting which served as the regular meeting for July, all in preparation for the start of the new school year which begins Aug. 21.

School board President Steve Bailey made note that the part-time contract for transportation supervisor, combined with a separate bus mechanic, is costing the district less than when they had a full-time transportation supervisor who served as both.

The board approved a one-year contract for Matt Freeman to serve as transportation supervisor for $16,000. A 3-year contract was also approved for him to serve as Quaker Tech Academy Administrator, with a salary of $49,227 in the first year, $49,965 in the second and $50,715 in the third.

Other three-year contracts approved were: school psychologist Lisa Lorubbio, $77,760 this year, $78,927 next year, $80,111 third year; school psychologist Larry Truzzie (as needed), $338 a day this year, $343 a day next year, $348 a day third year; school nurse Meghan Ferguson, $24.66 per hour this year, $25.03 per hour next year, $25.41 per hour third year; and Suzanne Hritz, $26.92 per hour this year, $27.32 per hour next year, $27.73 per hour third year.

The board hired the following teachers: Brooke Skiba, high school English, $29,905; Ashley Paulsen, elementary art, $29,905; Catherine Knowlden, jr. high intervention specialist, $29,905; Steve Bosel, ISS, $29,905; Susan Getz, grade 2, $34,242; and Allison Haynes, Title I Buckeye/St. Paul, $43,662. The board approved the retirement of teacher Carol Ewing after 20 years at Southeast School and a non-teaching one-year continuing contract for Aaron Vogt at $15.38 an hour.

For the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing, the board approved a two-year contract for director Kathleen Reagan for $58,362 in the first year and $59,237 in the second year and wage increases effective Aug. 1 for Deb Baker, $12.69 per hour and DeAnn Russell, $10.15 per hour. The resignation of Debra Scott was accepted.

In other personnel matters, the board: approved athletic supplementals for Robert Motz, girls tennis, Matthew Woodford, boys assistant JV soccer and Jarrod Niederhiser, middle school cross country; approved teachers and nurses for Kindergarten Camp set from Aug. 4 through Aug. 15; approved professional growth opportunities time for Tom Bratten to finish out his contract; approved converting up to five days of unused vacation into a per-diem payment for Dr. Joseph Shivers as acting superintendent; and approved state track tournament workers.

The board agreed to continue using Megan Gustavel as an athletic trainer for home events for fall sports at a fee of $125 per varsity football game, $50 per JV football game and $50 per boys and girls soccer games, not to exceed $2,475.

In other business, the board approved a contract with Duro-Last for the roofing project at Southeast Elementary for $76,525 and the service contract with the Columbiana County Educational Service Center for $203,558 for various services for the 2014/2015 school year, such as special needs classrooms, gifted and talented programming and other services.

The next meeting will be set for Aug. 18.
