Butler Township road renewal levy on ballot

BUTLER TOWNSHIP — Residents will be asked to renew the township’s oldest road levy on Nov. 8.

The township is seeking renewal for five years of its 3 mill road levy that will generate $142,300 annually. Approval of the levy will not increase taxes and eligible property owners will retain their rollbacks since the levy is calculated at its original property valuations, according to trustee Tom Sanor. The levy was originally approved by voters in 1997 and has never been replaced so far as Sanor knows, he said.

“It is valuated very, very low, so we’re hoping voters will approve it again,” Sanor said.

According to Sanor, the levy provides funds for construction, reconstruction, resurfacing and repair of township roads and bridges.

The township has two other levies on the books, including a 3.5 mill one voters renewed by a large margin in March, but Sanor said the one on November’s ballot, the oldest of the three, is essential to the township’s maintenance of roadways.

“We count on it desperately and are hoping voters continue to support the township,” he said. “Voters have always looked good on this levy.”

The township has 56 miles– or 120 lane miles– which all require plowing, de-icing, sweeping in the spring, constant ditching, cross-pipe maintenance, signage upkeep and mowing, all while keeping the roads on an annual rotating schedule of resurfacing.
