United BOE OKs 5-year forecast

HANOVERTON–The United school board Wednesday night approved the district’s five-year financial forecast.

Submitted by school Treasurer Melissa Baker, the forecast shows a positive cash balance until the final year when it dips to over $1.2 million in the red. The district is projected to operate in a deficit spending each year of the forecast, a deficit that increases from just over $720,000 in the first year to over $2 million in the last.

The forecast could be significantly impacted once the outcome of the tax appeal with the Utica Shale property in Kensington is known, Baker noted in her assumptions.

In other business, the board accepted the retirement of Carole Stefanish as the district’s Tobin (multi-county) teacher effective at the end of the school year. Stefanish has worked in the district the past 21 years.

The board also granted supplemental coaching contracts for the 2016-2017 school year to Mike Ward, assistant athletic director; Brandon Ellyson, assistant boys basketball; Chad Butcher, ninth-grade boys basketball; Jansen Sneltzer, eighth-grade boys basketball; Ryan Powell, seventh-grade boys basketball; Josh Sigler, assistant girls basketball; Todd Sarchet, ninth-grade girls basketball; Luke Williams, eighth-grade girls basketball; Courtney Hydrick, seventh-grade girls basketball; and Carol Brown, varsity basketball cheerleading; and approved Mike Ward as a volunteer boys basketball coach.

Also at the meeting, schools Superintendent Steve Viscounte reported open enrollment statistics that show 167 students incoming and 92 outgoing.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16 in the high school library.
