Columbiana Schools want to get dads more involved

COLUMBIANA — A new program is being implemented at the Joshua Dixon Elementary School to encourage more participation from students’ fathers.

School Principal Kim Sharshan told the board of education during last week that many times it is students’ mothers who are more available to the school due to their work schedules or being stay-at-home moms.

“They are parent-volunteering all the time. They are there a lot with their kids, and not a lot of dads,” she said.

The monthly program is through All Pro Dad’s Day, an organization with several chapters in schools across the nation.

The program would be an extension of the Dads of Great Students (D.O.G.S.) group that is already available to fathers of elementary students.

“The goal would be to strengthen families, strengthen the community,” district parent Bruce Jeffries said.

The new program will be available from 7:30 to 8:20 a.m. April 7 and May 5 in the elementary art room.

Breakfast will be available for purchase from the cafeteria.

The group will continue meeting on a monthly basis, with fathers given the opportunity to participate in fun activities and interactive discussions with their children.
