Leetonia will be going after those leaving trash at recycling center
LEETONIA — The village will be cracking down on people who leave trash at the recycling center behind Village Hall.
Village Administrator Gary Phillips last week said the village will be monitoring the program due to people placing trash in the recycling bins. Ohio Revised Code violations can result in fines up to $500.
“We will monitor, and identify the violators, and take whatever legal action is necessary to stop the violations(s) of the program,” he said in a written release.
]“These recycling sites are provided for public use, but only the recycling items listed on the outside of the container(s) are acceptable. All other items are classified as illegal.”
Phillips said people are leaving old furniture, appliances, mattresses and other items that are not permitted in the bins.
He said when people leave trash in the bins, it makes the job of recycling more difficult for those working at recycling centers sorting the materials.
The Carroll-Columbiana-Harrison Solid Waste District provides the five bins for free and empties the containers each day, Phillips said.
“It’s a really good program, and it’s just a shame that some people are abusing it,” he said. “There are people who are just trying to get rid of trash and using the recycling for it, and it creates a burden on the system.”
