Zoning inspector reminds residents of need for permit

PERRY TWP.

Zoning Inspector Allan Wolfgang is reminding township residents that any construction or remodeling project, roof reshingling, window installation, fencing or other building project with a value over $500 requires a zoning permit.

Even the placement of an already constructed accessory building or shed delivered to a property requires a permit.

“This is sort of a heads up to people,” Wolfgang said.

With spring, residents may start thinking about renovations or fixup projects to do. He said a lot of people aren’t aware that they have to get a permit. He said the zoning rules keep the township looking good, it’s not meant as a punishment but as a protection for neighbors. When asked about the already assembled sheds and the need for a permit, he said there are rules for where they can be placed, such as a certain distance from the property line and not in the front yard. They also can’t be larger than 216 square feet.

Residents also need a permit for a swimming pool, and for any kind of construction costing more than $500.

“They don’t want to get in violation of the regulations because they may have to move their construction,” Wolfgang said.

A permit costs $25 for any project valued between $500 and $5,000 and then an additional $3 per $1,000 over that value.

Anyone who needs a permit or has questions can contact Wolfgang at 330-332-9965.

With the annual township spring cleanup next month, he said now might be a good time to clean up yards and remove vehicles with expired plates, or campers and boat trailers stored in the front yards in violation of the township zoning ordinance. If in the yard, a boat trailer can’t be parked past the front of the house. Also campers should be parked on a paved area not between the residence and the road.

The spring cleanup for township residents who live outside of the city in the unincorporated areas will begin April 17 on the north side and April 24 for the south side. State Street is the dividing line between north and south. The limit is one truckload per household and items should be placed by the curb in uniform order. Items should be able to be lifted by one person. Only car and small truck tires off the rims will be accepted but should be kept separate from the other items and will be picked up separately. Branches and twigs also must be bundled and will be picked up separately.

No computer monitors, televisions or items containing freon are permitted. No propane tanks, no paint products or paint cans and no batteries are permitted either.

The large appliance drop-off will be held in the parking lot off of Pershing and Lundy, commonly known as Timberlanes lot, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12 and 8 a.m. to noon May 13. Nothing with freon and no computers will be accepted. The drop-off event for furniture and appliances will be restricted to residents of Perry Township and the city of Salem only.
