Columbiana County jobless rate declines

LISBON — Columbiana County’s unemployment rate declined for a second consecutive month in March.

The county’s jobless rate in March was 6.8 percent, down from 7.3 percent registered the month before, according to figures released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Meanwhile, Ohio’s unemployment rate remained the same at 5.1 percent, while the national rate declined slightly, from 4.7 percent to 4.5 percent.

The number of county residents receiving unemployment benefits declined from 3,400 to 3,087, with the average benefit being $364 per week. The county had an estimated workforce of 47,800 in March, a 600 increase from the month before.

Among adjoining Ohio counties, the county’s jobless rate was higher than Stark (5.6 percent) and Carroll (6.5 percent), but lower than Mahoning (8.7 percent) and Jefferson (7.8 percent).

The unemployment rate declined in 85 of Ohio’s 88 counties and increased in the remaining three. Mercer County again had the lowest jobless rate, 3 percent, while Monroe County again had the highest, 9.6 percent.
