3 Salem BOE members aim to keep seats
SALEM — Salem city school board members Howard Rohleder and Ted Bricker said they’ll seek re-election this fall while fellow board member LuAnn Haddad said she’ll seek to keep her seat through election to an unexpired term.
The three announced their intentions at a recent school board meeting. The filing deadline for the Nov. 7 election falls in August.
Rohleder joined the school board as an appointee in 2012, then won election to his own four-year term which began in 2014. In 2015 and 2016, he served as board president. Prior to his appointment, he served on the school district’s Audit and Finance Committee as a community representative for eight years.
Rohleder retired in 2012 after a 30-year career in health administration, serving the final 14 years as President/CEO of Salem Community Hospital, which is now known as Salem Regional Medical Center. His community activities include: Sustainable Opportunities Development Center Board of Directors (currently Past President); Salem Community Center Board of Directors (currently Treasurer); and Rotary Club of Salem member (previously President). He holds a master’s degree in health administration from The Ohio State University and a bachelor’s degree in economics and management from Albion College, Albion, Mich. He and his wife, Susan, live in Salem and their two children graduated from Salem City Schools.
Bricker was elected to the board in the fall of 2013 and is seeking a second four-year term. He’s a past vice president of the board and chairs the Building and Grounds Committee while also serving on the Curriculum Committee. He has worked at Butech Bliss for the past 17 years in the Purchasing Department. He’s a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church where he serves on the church council and the finance committee. He has also served as a volunteer baseball and basketball coach.
Bricker holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Muskingum College. He and his wife, Debbie, have lived their entire lives in the Salem area and are the parents of a sixth grade student at Southeast Elementary School.
Haddad was appointed to the school board in September 2016 to fill the spot vacated by the resignation of Angela Beck. Since more than half of the term was left to be served, the unexpired term will appear on the fall ballot. The term expires in December 2019. Haddad was elected vice president of the school board this past January and currently chairs the Community Relations Committee and serves on the Finance Committee.
After 32 years with Ohio Edison, she joined Salem Community Hospital as Vice President of Institutional Advancement, but is now retired. She volunteers as a member of the Rotary Club of Salem and as a board member of the United Way of Northern Columbiana County. She earned a bachelor’s degree in vocational education from The Ohio State University and a master’s degree from Hiram College. She and her husband, Bruce, are longtime Salem residents and parents of Salem High School graduates.
