Perry official updates on overgrown properties

PERRY TWP. — Zoning Inspector Allan Wolfgang said he’ll check with the prosecutor’s office to see if there’s anything the township can do legally to get further cleanup of two vacant Ansley Way properties since the owner recently cut down some brush.

A certified letter had been sent earlier this month to Courtney Real Estate, the listed owner of the property, giving seven days for the problem of overgrown weeds to be fixed. Gregory Courtney is listed as the taxpayer on Columbiana County Auditor online records.

“He brushed some of it out. In his mind, he’s cut some down,” Trustee Chairman Cliff Mix said.

Wolfgang had previously asked the board to declare both parcels on Ansley Way nuisance parcels due to overgrown weeds and dead trees, but the trustees said they had to await the certified letter process to give the property owner a chance to take action before they file the nuisance declaration.

Mix said they could still declare a nuisance possibly since the stuff wasn’t moved out, it was just cut down, but he said they can’t do anything about a dead tree a neighbor has been complaining about all along. Wynette Adkins, whose property stands between the two vacant parcels, attended the meeting for an update.

“All he did was make a mess,” she said, adding that now it’s just going to be a fire hazard.

She was concerned that the dead tree could come down on her home. She had previously expressed concern about the various critters living among the weeds on the parcels.

In other business, Wolfgang reported he issued seven zoning permits so far this month.

The 2018 tax budget for the township will be approved at the next meeting, slated for 6:30 p.m. July 10. A required tax budget hearing is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. prior to the July 10 meeting.

A possible police levy renewal was also being explored, with trustees passing a resolution to request the Columbiana County auditor check on the amount needing certified.
