Salem Lions to host Rod Stewart tribute act

George Orr “Rod Stewart tribute act”

SALEM — The Salem Lions Club will present George Orr, with his Hot Rod Stewart Band tribute act, at the Salem High School auditorium at 8 p.m. Aug.12.

Orr is a talented Scottish entertainer in his own right and is described simply as a vocalist who looks like Rod Stewart.

So when Orr hits the stage (doors open at 7 p.m.) he will feature the music of the famous British rock star.

Advance tickets are on sale for $25 at Salem Computer Center, 409 E. Second St., or by calling 330-692-1628.

Mel Lippiatt, president of the Salem Lions Club said Jenny Smith, one of the newer club members, saw Orr’s act in West Palm Beach, Fla. and knowing the club was exploring fund raising ideas, “eventually brought it up at a meeting.”

He added, ” We looked into it and thought it would be a good fund raiser.”

Lippiatt explained the Lions Club annual 5K is set for July 15 but the club was also “looking for different ways to fund projects.”

The club operates strictly on dues and is constantly looking for new members, he said.

The 5K begins at Waterworth Memorial Park in Pavilion 8.

After looking into Orr, the club found a date and booked him.

Lippiatt said Smith arranged, worked on and pulled everything together.

“We agreed to do it,” he said adding that, he covers the place pretty good,” meaning Orr gets around and while he’s not cheap he’s good.

Brownpapertickets.com wrote that when Orr signed his first recording contract in Scotland when he was 19, “Unknown to George at the time however, was the fact that he is probably the only person in the world who looks, sounds and moves so much like Rod Stewart that even Rod’s friends have been fooled.”

Orr is one of several South Florida tribute artists along with Chuck LaPaglia who sings Neil Diamond and Chris MacDonald who does Elvis while Orr is “Hey, you look like Rod Stewart,” Hot Rod Stewart.

“We’re selling tickets for $25 until Aug. 1,” Lippiatt said and then the price goes to $35.

The Salem Lions Club money stays in the community and it has put money into Lions Field in Waterworth Memorial Park, the Salem Police Department K-9 unit, glasses for people who can’t afford them after meeting certain financial criteria, the flag pole on the village green, the Memorial Building, diabetes and assisting with elementary school vision screening.

“We help nurses with vision screening. We’re willing to do vision screening, even in pre-school, it’s important for them to have good vision before starting,” Lippiatt said, adding the Lions Club has eyeglass drop-off boxes at Giant Eagle, Sparkle Market, the Re-Store and Arbaugh Pearce Greenisen Funeral Home.

The glasses are refurbished and sent to charities.

The Lions Club also picked up the Salem Township Police Department and Leetonia Police Department “Care and Share” holiday program that benefits families undergoing economic hardship.

There are a couple of donated baskets that will be raffled off at the George Orr Show, Lippiatt said, including four general admission tickets to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, six Pittsburgh Pirates versus the Chicago Cubs game on Sept. 6, three for one-yard containers of top soil from John Wilms Trucking and two adult tickets to the Pittsburgh Zoo.
