SALEM — The Sears Hometown Store will be closing in mid-July, owner Cindy Burch said of the corporate decision.

The store, the second iteration of Sears in Salem after the store on South Broadway Avenue closed years ago, is at 2350 E. State St. in the Salem Plaza.

Burch said as a “hometown store” the closing wasn’t her idea. There is one full-time and six part-time employees who will lose their jobs.

She said the “hometown” stores were different from the mall stores that are corporate owned.

Sears advised her about two weeks ago about the closing and since then “close-out” sales banners have been in place.

In closing for good, the Salem Sears Hometown Store will be joining several area locations that have done the same.

In January, Sears announced seven store closings in Ohio and Salem was not on the list.

All were all in small market areas and in April, the Sears location at the Shenango Valley Mall in Hermitage closed and the Sears Appliance and Hardware store in Austintown announced its closing last October.

The Salem store announced on its social media page that it’s having a liquidation sale over the next 30 days and that everything must go — including the fixtures.

Burch said it was with mixed emotions that the store is closing.

Over the next 30 days, customers will be able to visit the 9,000 square-foot showroom and obtain 40 percent off on appliances, including refrigerators, ranges, freezers, dishwashers, washer-dryers and microwaves while hand tools and power tools are all 30 percent off.

“We’re selling out pretty quick,” she said.

Power tools include riding tractors, lawn mowers, snowblowers, power spray washers, gas grilles and tool chests.

“We have lots of push mowers,” Burch said, adding that all items sold will have full warranty covered by Sears.
