Fairfield road department ready for winter

FAIRFIELD TWP. — Road Supervisor Mel Miller advised trustees Thursday the department is preparing road and equipment for winter.

Miller said the salt spreaders were installed on the trucks while minor repairs were made.

Part of the effort was directed at cleaning leaves from ditches and removing trees that fell.

Miller referred to several dead ash trees on Unity Road, noting “all were leaning toward the road.” There was cold patch work on the edge of Beeson Mill Road and a number of other roads throughout the township and there was asphalt repair on Metz Road where a sewer line is being installed for the water treatment project in the area.

Trustee Barry Miner commended the road department.

“The roads are in impeccable shape. We’re fortunate for the levy and the road crew. My hat’s off to them,” he said.

In his report, Miner asked if something could be done to improve a “wet spot” in the back corner of the Headwater Nature Trail and Miller said, “Yes.”

The trail, behind the Fairfield Township government building, is being built at the headwater of Mill Creek.

With the help of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, trustees have steadily been transfroming about 16 acres into a small, scenic showcase to help connect people with nature and local history.

Mill Creek is a well-known regional waterway and it inspire township officials, headed by Miner, to develop a park as a visitor attraction along with informational displays about the beginning of the creek.

Also in his report, Miner said he attended the Columbiana County Port Authority open house recently.

He said “they’re looking for property” and he showed them a map highlighting township property with areas already zoned for industry.
